A Twitter user in Japan captured images of at least two prototype 2023 Honda Civic Type R rear ends, fully exposed, on the back of a truck in mid-June.

The Twitter user, ‘yamazoh’, saw the two Civics while travelling along a Japanese highway, seemingly after they were used for a crash test. The user also captured a single image of the Civic Type R’s exhaust pipes and rear suspension. A cut in the tarp also showed a portion of the rear wing, besides the now-signature single exhaust pipe that splits into three sections at the rear.

The tips have a polished finish, and unlike the current Civic Type R, the pipe in the centre of the rear is larger than the outlets on the sides — like the FK8-generation model, with three centrally-mounted tailpipes.

While new specs haven’t been officially released, we expect the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that powered the FK8 model to sit underhood; it offers 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque in current trim. As a front-wheel-drive car, the engine couples well with a six-speed manual transmission.

Moreover, the new Civic Type R comes exclusively as a five-door hatchback.

The Civic Type R is expected to debut in Europe in June. In the U.S., the vehicle will be revealed in full at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio in Lexington, Ohio, running from July 1 through 3, according to Motor1.
