On Nov. 22, 2018, at 8:15 pm, 31-year-old Bakir was shot in the driveway of his Clifton Downs Rd. home in Hamilton.
Alessandro Giammichele, 28, of Hamilton, is now charged with first-degree murder. Also known as “Gino” and “Sandro,” he was arrested Wednesday in Thunder Bay by Hamilton investigators without incident.
Abdelaziz Ibrahim, 25, of Hamilton, who is currently in custody on unrelated and unspecified matters, will also be charged with first-degree murder in Bakir’s death.
Det. Sgt. Steve Bereziuk told the Toronto Sun’s Brad Hunter in February that there was never any doubt Bakir was the hitman’s quarry.
“For him to be murdered execution-style in the driveway of his home … this was pre-planned, pre-meditated … 100% this was a hit,” Bereziuk said, adding the execution “has nothing to do with drugs or weapons.”
Hamilton cops worked with their counterparts in Sudbury and Thunder Bay as well as OPP in Manitoulin Island, Sudbury and Thunder Bay on the case.
“If you had to describe Marko in one word, it would simply be loveable,” his family said in a February release during a renewed appeal for information in the case. “He was loved by everyone. He posted positive, encouraging quotes daily, was supportive and would give you the shirt off his back. He was very unique.”
