Two Sentence Horror Stories Quietly Canceled at The CW

Many fan favorite shows have been recently canceled by The CW amid content strategy changes at the network, and it’s been confirmed that another popular series was quietly axed as well. Back in 2019, The CW premiered the first season of Two Sentence Horror Stories, an anthology series with each episode featuring a self-contained plot and cast of characters. Season 2 would follow in early 2021 with the third season airing in early 2022.

Halfway through 2023, there’s been no word on when Two Sentence Horror Stories may potentially return for a fourth season, leading to speculation that the show was finished. TVLine reports that any such speculation would be accurate. The horror anthology series was reportedly axed, which was “to the surprise of perhaps no one,” with no fourth season on the way.

The CW’s massacre of content has claimed many other victims in recent months. Most recently, the network put an end to the Walker prequel Walker Independence, as well as the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, with each lasting just one season. Kung Fu was axed after a three-season run, while longtime shows Riverdale, Nancy Drew, and The Flash have also been wrapping up their respective runs. Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights are still on the bubble, but it’s rumored that the network will renew one of these shows but not the other and haven’t yet decided on which one to keep. For what it’s worth, it’s also been reported that Superman & Lois would likely move to Max if that one gets the boot at The CW.

Two Sentence Horror Stories Ends It Run

Two Sentence Horror Stories was created by Vera Miao, who executive produced with Emily Wiedemann and Chazz Carfora. Some of the guest stars to be featured in the series include Jim Parrack, Wai Ching Ho, Kate Jennings, Aleyse Shannon, Pepper Binkley, Emily Tennant, Gordon Cormier, Kevin Alves, Michelle Arvizu, Zak Santiago, and Romaine Waite.

“It’s challenging, but it’s also fun,” Miao said of crafting episodes of the series together in a Collider interview. “You can’t repeat or overlap, either episodes to each other, or episodes to previous seasons. I always tell people that I’m entryway agnostic. However we get there, we get there.”

Miao continued, “Sometimes you start with a two-sentence horror story, itself. Other times, we start with a sub-genre of horror that we haven’t explored yet. Other times, it’s about a scenario that one of us is personally really frightened of, as a starting point. Other times, it’s about what kinds of characters or context we think are really interesting, and that we’d love to explore through a horror lens. It’s almost like a matrix that I’ve constructed for the writers’ room, where we had sub genres and issues and characters and fears and stories. Whatever gets us to a strong, tight idea, however we start the path, to end there is good by me.”
