Tyler Skaggs’ family asks court to compel Angels to produce documents in suit

Attorneys for Tyler Skaggs’ family have filed a motion in Texas court to compel the Angels to produce documents and information in relation to their wrongful death lawsuit against the club.

The documents requested refer to the team’s investigation into Skaggs’ death. The motion claims the Angels have refused to produce the documents.

The U.S. attorney’s office filed a similar motion in the criminal case against Eric Kay, but the Angels fought the request. The judge sided with the Angels in a ruling that was sealed at the time.

The suit alleges the Angels had knowledge, or should have had knowledge, that could have prevented Skaggs from dying after using opioids in 2019.

Kay, a longtime Angels media relations employee, has been charged in federal criminal court with supplying the drugs that led to Skaggs’ death. Kay’s criminal trial is set to begin in February.

Kay is also listed as a defendant in the Texas civil suit, although former vice president in charge of communications Tim Mead has now been removed as a defendant in that suit.

Mead and Kay had both been removed as defendants in a similar suit in California.

Skaggs’ widow, Carli, is suing the Angels in California, and his parents are suing the Angels in Texas. The two suits are because of different laws covering wrongful death liability in the two states.

The Angels have insisted publicly ever since Skaggs’ death, and again after the civil suit was initially filed on June 29, that no one in management with the team had any knowledge that Skaggs and Kay were using illegal drugs.
