Eddie Hearn hits out at Tyson Fury’s promoter

Tyson Fury met with Oleksandr Usyk in New York last night ahead of a prospective undisputed heavyweight title fight.

Fury holds the WBC heavyweight title, while Usyk is currently reigning champion with the WBO, WBA and IBF, and they are both just one fight away from a bout to unify the division.

Before they can fight, Fury will need to beat mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte early next year, while Usyk will need to repeat his heroics from last time out against Anthony Joshua in their rematch.

Both fights will take place in the early part of 2022, so an undisputed bout could take place as early as the second half of next year, after the pair sized each other up at ringside in Madison Square Garden.

The pair had gone back-and-forth on a facetime call just hours prior, with Fury making the evidently literal statement that he was “coming for” Usyk.

“Oleksandr the great! Tell Oleksandr, I am coming,” Fury had told Usyk during a brief call with his fellow champion, which was facilitated by his coach SugarHill Stewart.

The pair were in Manhattan to watch Vasily Lomachenko continue his run back to the top of the lightweight division, with his countryman Usyk one of his biggest supporters.

Fury jetted in with wife Paris from their Las Vegas home primarily to celebrate his promoter Bob Arum’s birthday, with the promoter turning 90 on Wednesday night.

And Usyk photobombed a photo Fury was taking with his promoter, before ultimately posing for a snap with the pair that could deliver him a massive US fight night of his own next year.

Fury even stepped into the ring to serenade Arum for his birthday celebration, breaking out a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ before reliving his famous performance of American Pie from two years prior in Las Vegas.

Both Usyk and Fury are undefeated, with the Ukrainian having experience as an undisputed champion at cruiserweight.

The 2012 Olympic gold medalist defeated top contenders such as Tony Bellew and current champion Mairis Briedis at 200lbs before moving up to heavyweight in 2019.

He struggled with his early fights at the weight, looking unimpressive in wins over Chazz Witherspoon and Dereck Chisora before being named as mandatory challenger for Joshua’s unified titles.

But he put it all together against Joshua in London when they squared off in September, comfortably outboxing the Brit for twelve rounds on his way to becoming just the third cruiserweight champion to move up and win gold at heavyweight.

He joined David Haye and Evander Holyfield in the history books with his win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but would still be an underdog going into a bout with Fury.

The Manchester native is half-a-foot taller with a seven-inch reach advantage over Usyk, and is coming off two brutal knockouts over Deontay Wilder for the WBC belt.
