Tyson Fury confirms plan to retire after knocking out Dillian Whyte

Fury has once again defended his world heavyweight championship in front of a sold-out crowd at Wembley Stadium in what he claims will be the final fight of his storied career

Tyson Fury has confirmed he is planning to retire from boxing after knocking out Dillian Whyte at Wembley

The world heavyweight champion viciously stopped Whyte in the sixth round of their mandatory title fight in front of a record-breaking 94,000-person crowd in his home country. He dropped his fellow Brit with a massive uppercut to finish the fight, and now believes his career is over.

He had vowed to finish his fighting journey after defeating Deontay Wilder in their trilogy bout in Las Vegas last year, but has now told wife Paris that he will retire after a stunning homecoming. “I promised my lovely wife Paris of 14 years that after the Wilder 3 fight, that would be it,” he told BT Sport after the fight.

“I meant it, we had a war, it was a great trilogy and I meant that. But I got offered to fight at Wembley at home and I believe I owed it to the fans, every person in the United Kingdom to come here and fight at Wembley. Now that it’s all done, I think this is it, this might be the final curtain for the Gypsy King. What a way to go out, a big thank you to the United Kingdom!”

Fury won every round on his way to defeating Whyte, not allowing the Londoner to get inside and land his famous left hook. And with the halfway point of the fight just seconds away, he landed the same shot that cost Whyte his other two losses against Anthony Joshua and Alexander Povetkin.

“First of all I want to say, as always, I dedicate this to my lord and saviour Jesus Christ,” Fury proclaimed in his post-fight speech. “He gave me the victory again tonight and I gave him the glory. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I won this fight in my lovely country tonight.

“My England! We are spartans! I just want to say, I’m overwhelmed with the support and I cannot believe that my 94,000 countrymen and women have come here tonight to see me perform. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to every single person who bought a ticket here tonight or stayed up late to watch this on TV.

” Dillian Whyte is a warrior, and I believe he will be a world champion. But tonight, he met a great in the sport. I’m one of the greatest heavyweights of all times and unfortunately for Dillian Whyte, he had to face me here tonight.

And he took the opportunity to thank coach SugarHill Steward, who turned him from the sleek boxer he was when he first became champion into the power puncher he has become in recent years. “This man here, SugarHill Steward, made me the great fighter that I am,” he added.

“Years ago, I used to jib and jab, touch and slide, but you’ve seen now tonight, Sugar, what a legend you are, mate. You’ve made me the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division by a mile. This man is the best trainer in world boxing including anybody. Unbelievable tonight, we were.”
