Fury confirms retirement plans after stopping Whyte

Tyson Fury hopped straight on the phone to promoter Bob Arum after his KO win over Dillian Whyte.

Fury dropped and stopped British rival Whyte in the sixth round to retain his heavyweight world title at Wembley. And he made sure to call veteran promoter Arum who had been unable to make the trip.

Fury, who is represented in the UK by Frank Warren, confirmed the chat at his post-fight press conference, and added: “I had a meeting with Bob in 2019 and I said, ‘What’s the motivation, Bob? Why, at nearly 90 years old, do you want to be involved with a British heavyweight?’. He said, ‘I came into this game promoting the best heavyweight in the world (Muhammad Ali) and I’m going out promoting the best heavyweight in the world.”

Fury’s Top Rank promoters were represented by president Todd de Boeuf who said: “This would have been Bob’s amazing night, he’s 90 and he came into the business in 66. You talked to him in the ring and I know he would want to be here more than anything. It was his body of work to watch what you did tonight.”

Fury dominated from the opening bell as he took control of the fight with his jab. Whyte was unable to judge the distance to the heavyweight champion and was all too often left swinging at the night air.

Fury, 33, later confirmed his plan to retire but also left the door open to an exhibition bout with UFC heavyweight world champion Francis Ngannou and an appearance at WrestleMania in Cardiff in September.

“I’ve spent a lot of time on the road, I’ve been away a long time,” Fury insisted. “I’ve fulfilled everything I’ve ever wanted to fulfil. I’m going to retire as only the second heavyweight in history, after Rocky Marciano, to retire undefeated.”
