It’s not uncommon for fight negotiations to be drawn-out affairs when the biggest bouts in boxing are concerned. However, the road to setting up a unification showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk appears to have been bumpier than usual.
Both camps have accused one another of being at fault in recent days, even though Usyk publicly agreed to take just 30 per cent of the purse at Wembley on April 29. All appeared well as Fury, 34, soon updated fans that his fight camp was underway—but the complications didn’t stop there.
‘The Gypsy King’ has more recently raised issue with the insertion of a rematch clause, only for Usyk to fire back that it was the Brit who wanted that stipulation in the first place. The Ukrainian’s promoter, Alexander Krassyuk, backed up those claims in an interview with talkSPORT, adding ‘greedy belly’ is “scared to fight” and is looking for excuses to avoid ‘The Cat’.
“As soon as Usyk accepts a no-rematch clause there will still be searching for another thing to find and pull out the fight,” said Krassyuk, casting doubt as to whether the muc-desired unification clash will go ahead. “I tell you why. He bluffed and Usyk called his bluff. This is 100 per cent. He didn’t expect Usyk to accept 70-30.”

And in the latest twist to the tale, Krassyuk entertained fans with four predicted ‘clauses’ and the next line of excuses that will likely arise. Amid insurmountable tensions between the two titans of boxing, fans will have been relieved to see some light humour emerge.
“Spoiler for tomorrow,” read the screengrabbed forecast. “Tyson Fury sends out the agreement where there is no rematch clause, no anti-doping testing, only local judges, Usyk is forbidden to use his left hand, [five-minute] rest between the rounds etc. etc. and then goes on Instagram like: “You middleweight gapped teethed rabbit, you’ve got the contract. You’ve sh****d yourself. If it’s not signed in 25 seconds I’ll fight Jake Paul next.”
A big part of the (clearly tongue-in-cheek) prediction’s appeal is the fact it’s not difficult to imagine The Gypsy King making such a threat himself. Fury’s younger half-brother, Tommy, recently became the first man to beat Paul in the ring after clinching a decision win over the YouTuber in Saudi Arabia last month.
