Tyson Fury made every inch of his height advantage count as he towered over rival Dillian Whyte in their first official face-off.
Fury and Whyte will meet in the ring at Wembley on Saturday night having been largely silent in the build-up. Fury locked himself away at his Morecambe training base while Whyte flew to Portugal and skipped the announcement press conference last month as well as yesterday’s open workout.
But Whyte, who stands at 6’4″, five inches shorter than Fury, did take part in a low-key press conference in the shadow of the national stadium. “I’m excited to be here,” he said. “Sorry I couldn’t be here earlier but I’m here now so let’s go. It means everything to me to fight in my home country, especially in Wembley as it’s not too far from where I’m from. It’s a big fight and like Tyson said we didn’t expect to be here, me especially anyway.

“I’ve taken risks time and time again, a couple of slip-ups along the way, but I’m here and ready to go. There’s two sides to every story, you lot hear one side because one side says a lot of things. The fight was signed but there were other things happening behind the scenes. I just need to go and do my thing. I take every day as it comes because with my life story every day for me is a blessing, my life has been tough.”
Fury and Whyte later faced off for the first time with the procedure interrupted only by the champion’s dad John who rowed with a member of Whyte’s entourage. The two fighters shook hands and later posed for further pictures on the Wembley pitch.

Earlier, Fury said: “The fight is here, big night just a few days away. Dillian has landed, the boys are here, lights camera action. Training went well, I started training in January. Me and [trainer] SugarHill did seven weeks together, we’ve had a great preparation.
“There are never any complaints from me. We do what we do in training camps and we do the best we can on the night. Dillian is a good fighter and the fans are in for a treat. I know Dillian and we’re going to throw down on the night and give the fans a barnstormer.”
