Topline
The U.S. and several other NATO allies are considering sending thousands more troops to Eastern Europe amid escalating fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, CNN reported Wednesday, citing three anonymous U.S. officials.
Key Facts
The additional personnel could be stationed in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania and about 1,000 troops would be deployed to each country accepting additional personnel, CNN reports.
Other NATO countries than the U.S. are considering contributing troops, CNN reported, citing an anonymous European diplomat, but the United Kingdom is the only one named.
The U.S. Department of Defense said Monday that up to 8,500 troops are on “heightened preparedness” for possible deployment to Eastern Europe as part of a NATO response force and any further American forces would presumably come from this group.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment.
Key Background
President Joe Biden confirmed Tuesday that the U.S. has “no intention” to send troops to Ukraine, but American personnel could be sent to nearby NATO countries amid their rising alarm over Russia’s aggressive posture. More than 125,000 Russian troops are stationed near the Ukraine border, according to Ukrainian intelligence, and Russia is carrying out military drills across the country Wednesday. Thousands of NATO troops are already stationed across Eastern Europe, including a land force of up to 4,000 multinational troops in Romania. Of the more than 70,000 U.S. troops stationed across Europe, 6,000 are in Eastern Europe.
Crucial Quote
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said Wednesday the country is in contact with the U.S. and France about accepting additional troops: “I have been constantly saying we are ready to host an increased allied presence on our territory.”
