Ubisoft Reportedly Closing Down Several European Offices, Including Ubisoft Benelux

Ubisoft is reportedly closing down several European offices, including Ubisoft Benelux.

At least, that’s what an alleged e-mail from the publisher says. A part of the e-mail (which includes a letter) was posted on the ResetEra forums earlier today (thanks Creamium). Going by the posted snippet, a “number of subsidiaries in Europe” will be closed down due to the publisher facing challenges caused by “external factors”. Although Ubisoft is said to be closing down various European offices, the e-mail only directly mentions its Benelux studio. “Unfortunately, the Ubisoft Benelux entity is subject to the intended closure with most employees departing as of April 1st, 2023”, the alleged snipper reads.

We’ve included the snippet from the Ubisoft letter, as posted on the ResetEra forums, below:

“As we all know, the market is constantly evolving and as an organization we need to keep up with it. At this time, Ubisoft is facing several challenges due to external factors, such as the decline in sales volume of physical games in favor of digital sales, the centralization of marketing by digitizing all our communication channels, the shift from major retail releases to F2P, mobile and seasonal games and less major physical shows.
To meet the challenges of the future, Ubisoft’s management has decided to close a number of subsidiaries in Europe. Unfortunately, the Ubisoft Benelux entity is subject to the intended closure with most employees departing as of April 1st, 2023.
Due to the closure, Ubisoft BV will fully outsource the current distribution of physical games in the Benelux to a distributor to be announced at a later stage.”

While several European offices will be affected by this decision, European development studios appear to remain unaffected.

If true, this will be unfortunate for the affected employees at the European offices. We’ll update you once more information about this matter comes in. For now, stay tuned and discuss this rumored closure of the publisher’s European offices down below.

In other Ubisoft-related news – as covered last month, the publisher is said to be going all in on its Assassin’s Creed IP with 4 game projects allegedly being planned. Of course, this is merely a rumor for now.

For this year, Ubisoft will be releasing Assassin’s Creed Mirage on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, Stadia, and even Amazon Luna. In addition, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed will be made available for PC players with an active Ubisoft+ subscription.
