Ubisoft’s Open-World Star Wars Game Could Launch In 2024, Report Says

Ubisoft’s Star Wars game from the studio that made The Division is potentially going to release as soon as 2024, a new report suggests. According to unnamed sources speaking to Kotaku, the Star Wars title is the unspecified “large game” that Ubisoft recently disclosed would be released during the company’s current fiscal year that ends on March 31, 2024.

It is one of several games set for release during that period, the others being Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Rainbow Six Mobile, Skull and Bones, The Crew Motorfest, The Division Resurgence, and XDefiant.

Ubisoft’s Star Wars game is reportedly in development under the codename Project Helix. Julian Gerighty, the director on The Division and The Division 2, is the creative director.

According to Kotaku, Ubisoft’s Star Wars game will feature “some form of interplanetary space travel” and that “hopes are high internally” that it could become Ubisoft’s first non-Assassin’s Creed hit game in a while. The same sources said a release during the current fiscal year is “probably too ambitious” and that it will actually launch in the following fiscal year (April 1, 2024 – March 31, 2025).

A spokesperson for Ubisoft told GameSpot, “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

Ubisoft has faced some tough financial times of late. The company recently announced that it is trying to find $200 million in cost savings over the next couple of years through canceling games and layoffs, among other initiatives.

Ubisoft presumably has plenty of games in the works that could be considered “large,” so if it’s not Star Wars, it could be something else. In any event, Ubisoft management said on an earnings call that it will have more news to share about its upcoming release slate during Ubisoft Forward in June.

Gerighty previously said that 2023 will be a “huge year” for the team, but this doesn’t necessarily mean the game is going to launch this year.

Ubisoft’s new Star Wars game is a “story-driven, open-world experience within the Star Wars galaxy that will also utilize the studio’s cutting-edge technology and advancements, including the Snowdrop engine,” according to the publisher. No other details have been announced, but again, the game could be shown during Ubisoft Forward on June 12.

In other Ubisoft news, the company recently announced plans to ramp up its Assassin’s Creed development team sizes, from 2,000 to about 2,800 in the coming years.

Ubisoft’s Star Wars game is not the only new Star Wars game in development. Disney reportedly wants two Star Wars games per year, and some of the other games in the works now include Star Wars Eclipse from Quantic Dream and a Star Wars FPS from Respawn.
