UFC 267: Islam Makhachev submitted Dan Hooker.

Islam Makhachev defeated Dan Hooker via submission (kimura), Round 1 – 2:25 at UFC 267 on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, live from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

“Now, it’s time. Before it was like top 11, top 15, but this guy number six… I’m coming to take this belt and keep this belt for many years,” said Makhachev in a post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. The win was Makhachev’s ninth in a row and improved his career record to 21-1.

The first round opened with the crowd chanting in support of Makhachev, who scored a takedown in the opening minute of the fight. The referee repeatedly warned Makhachev for strikes to the back of the head. Makhachev transitioned to a kimura, which left Hooker’s arm trapped behind his back. Hooker was unable to lock his arms and was eventually forced to tap out. Following the fight, Makhachev went over to Dana White and started talking about a potential fight in December.

Dan Hooker took the fight with Islam Makhachev on short notice

Hooker took the fight with Makhachev on short notice after coming off his decision win over Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266. Hooker had issues getting into the United States and almost missed the bout with Haqparast.

Makhachev was originally slated to face off with Rafael dos Anjos but an injury to the former lightweight champion left Makhachev scrambling for an opponent. He was looking to keep the 8-fight win streak going with a win over the fan-favorite.
