UFC 269: Raulian Paiva is embracing the underdog role ahead of Sean O’Malley fight (Video)

UFC bantamweight Raulian Paiva is embracing the underdog role ahead of his clash with Sean O’Malley at UFC 269.

UFC bantamweight Raulian Paiva has noticed that Sean O’Malley has talked about just about everything else except for their fight at UFC 269, but he’s embracing being the underdog in their matchup.

Paiva will face O’Malley in his second bantamweight fight since signing with the UFC in 2019. O’Malley is entering their fight as not only the fan-favorite but as a preemptive favorite to challenge for the title sooner rather than later.

But all the praise that O’Malley is getting isn’t impacting his approach. During his UFC 269 pre-fight press conference, Paiva explained how he handles being overlooked by the masses.

“This has happened a lot in my life,” Paiva said. “You think of my last fight, fights before, I’ve always been an underdog. I shut up people that bet against me by winning. My advice to people betting against me; save your money.”

Paiva is coming off of arguably the best performance of his career against Kyler Phillips earlier this year, blitzing the former ranked contender and winning a majority decision. He previously earned flyweight wins over Zhalgas Zhumagulov and Mark De La Rosa despite having various difficulties with weight cutting.

Paiva has a chance to make a name for himself against O’Malley at UFC 269. If he’s able to pull off the upset, he could be a blossoming star at 135 pounds and could eventually enter the title picture.
