Matt Frevola credits “killer instinct” for a wild, early finish of Genaro Valdez.
UFC lightweight Matt Frevola had a quick night at the office at UFC 270 against Genaro Valdez, but it was anything but easy.
Frevola and Valdez threw bombs from the early seconds of the fight onward, with each one of them showing off their ability to take and give in the pocket. But, it was Frevola who dictated the pace as the fight went on, earning four knockdowns and eventually earning the TKO finish.
During his UFC 270 post-fight press conference, Frevola explained his mindset leading up to the gritty finish over Valdez.
“I went in there trying to be patient,” Frevola said. “But, the killer instinct came out. I smelled blood and went for the finish. I’m still learning on the job, and the best is still yet to come.”

Frevola came into the fight desperately needing a win after getting knocked out in seconds against Terrance McKinney at UFC 263. Before that, he lost a unanimous decision to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 257.
There was a considerable amount of pressure on Frevola after how his last two fights went but knocked down Valdez time and time again in the opening minutes to eventually sure the finish.
Valdez was making his promotional debut after earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series in October. The loss to Frevola eliminated his undefeated run in his professional career entering UFC 270.
Frevola gets back in the win column with a tough win over Valdez, and he’ll look to continue his rise in the lightweight division as a dangerous opponent for most fighters.
