UFC 270: Matt Frevola defeated Genaro Valdez.

Matt Frevola defeated Genaro Valdez via TKO (strikes), Round 1 – 3:15 at UFC 270 on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.

“Yeah, I knew he was a great Mexican fighter, I had all the respect for him. I’m learning. This is my seventh fight in the Octagon and I’m learning on the job. I just knew he was so tough. I was thinking, should I go for the choke. I just kept pushing and got him in the end,” said Frevola.

From the opening bell until the finish, the fight between Frevola and Valdez was an all-out war. Both fighters came out through kicks and punches at an extremely high rate. The fight turned in favor of Frevola after he landed his first of five knockout downs.

Every time Valdez was dropped, he found a way to defend himself and get back to his feet. While referee Mike Beltran moved in and looked for a reason to stop the fight as the knockdowns piled up, Valdez refused to give him a reason to stop the fight until the very end.

The end came after the final knockdown by Frevola. After initially attempting to choke out Valdez, Frevola instead flattened out Valdez and started reigning down punches. Valdez covered up, leaving the referee no choice but to stop the fight after an incredible, action-packed three minutes.

Frevola entered UFC 270 in need of a victory after losing his two previous fights. In his last fight, Frevola was knocked out in seven seconds by Terrance McKinney. The performance was easily Frevola’s best since joining the UFC and could be enough to earn him a performance bonus.

Valdez made his UFC debut on Saturday night. The Mexican fighter entered the Octagon with a perfect 10-0 record. While Valdez suffered his first career loss on Saturday, he remains an exciting prospect to watch.
