Tony Gravely gets second-most takedowns in UFC bantamweight history as he defeats Saimon Oliveira at UFC 270.
It wasn’t the easiest win, but Tony Gravely managed to impress with his unanimous decision win over Saimon Oliveira at UFC 270.
Gravely found himself in trouble early, but Gravely fired off takedown after takedown and racked up points on the judges’ scorecards.
“We knew he was tough,” Gravely said in a post-fight interview. “We knew that he was going to be relentless on the guillotines, and he’s more of a striker. I guess I’ll have to watch and see exactly how I feel about my performance, but I’m happy to get the win.”
Tony Gravely troubled by a guillotine early before taking over the ground battle
Oliveira stunned Gravely very early in the fight, locking in a guillotine choke that seemed to be so tight that it would be a quick night that would end in a Gravely loss.
Gravely, however, managed to slip out before becoming the one who was doing the taking down.
Gravely scored 11 takedowns in the fight, which is good enough for second-most in a three-round UFC bantamweight bout behind Merab Dvalishvili.
And any more takedowns Oliveira tried to pull off, Gravely easily held off.
“It was tight, but the main thing in those positions is to keep calm, breathe, fight the hands,” Gravely said. “The first little bit, he got me with the front kick, got me in the eye a little bit. We got in a scramble and he jumped on my neck. He kind of got a head start on that one. That was the tightest. The other ones…we did a lot of defense, switching to the single-leg when he did it, get on the far side. We drilled it…and I did it a ton in the fight.”
After a win on Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2019, Gravely is now 3-2 in the UFC.
