Even in his 40s, Glover Teixeira was still one of the best to fight in the UFC Octagon, able to hold his own with the rest of the best of them.
Alas, all good things must come to an end. And for Teixeira, his end came after a loss to Jamahal Hill in the light heavyweight championship main event of UFC 283.
Teixeira is the second legendary Brazilian fighter to retire on this card, following Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s retirement earlier in the night.
“I think I’m too tough for my own good, I’m too tough for my own health,” Teixeira said after the fight. “It’s an honor to retire on the same night as Shogun Rua.”

Teixeira made his professional MMA debut in 2002, going 2-2 in his first four fights before amassing a 20-fight win streak that stretched into his tenure with the UFC.
Teixeira made his UFC debut at 146, submitting Kyle Kingsbury. He won five straight — including wins over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Ryan Bader — before challenging Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 172. Teixeira lost a unanimous decision.
Teixeira then went 5-4 in his first nine fights after facing Jones, scoring wins over Ovince Saint Preux, Rashad Evans and Jared Cannonier.
Teixeira won six straight between 2019 and 2021, a run that culminated with Teixeira pulling off an upset, second-round submission of Jan Blachowicz at UFC 267 — two days after his 42nd birthday — to capture the UFC light heavyweight championship. Teixeira would lose the title in 2022’s Fight of the Year with Jiri Prochazka at UFC 275.
