Gabriel Bonfim defeated Mounir Lazzez via submission (guillotine choke), Round 1 – 0:49 at UFC 283 on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, live from Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“The Bonfim brothers are here to become champions. One at lightweight, one at welterweight. We are here to make history. When I locked in the guillotine, I knew, that’s it,” said Bonfim.
Bonfim made his UFC debut at UFC 283 and he made sure it was memorable. Bonfim caught Lazzez coming in for a takedown, locking him in a guillotine. The Brazilian made it look extremely easy as he rolled through, gaining top position. The choke forced Lazzez to tap out only 49 seconds into the fight. The victory improved Bonfim’s record to 14-0, with finishes in all 14 of his fights. The 25-year-old Brazilian will be one of the top prospects to watch in 2023.
Back in the locker room, UFC cameras caught Ismael Bonfim, Gabriel’s older brother celebrating. Ismael, 27, also made his UFC debut at UFC 283. On the early preliminary card, he knocked out Terrance McKinney with a flying knee. The knockout improved his record to 19-3.
