Boxing: Fury calls out Ngannou, McIntyre and Joshua

Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury are at the top of the heavyweight division in their respective sports, but their fight purses are light years apart.

Ngannou is caught up in contractual issues with the UFC as his title defence against Cyril Gane at UFC 270 next month marks the last fight on his current deal.

Fury has been called to defend his WBC title against mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte next, but the Brit wants to set up an undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk instead.

Ngannou has drawn comparisons between boxing and UFC fight purses, previously questioning what UFC fighters “are doing wrong” after Jake Paul earned £15m for an exhibition fight.

White dismissed Ngannou’s comments and told the heavyweight he should have “started a YouTube channel he was 12 years old” if he wanted that type of money.

Ngannou was six fights deep into his MMA career when he made his UFC debut in 2015, pocketing a mere £17,000 for his win against Luis Henrique.

The Cameroonian’s paydays improved as he continued to knockout his opponents and gain momentum, earning £70,000 for his devastating finish of Alistair Overeem in 2017.

His 20-second knockout of Jairzinho Rozenstruik last year earned him a title shot against Stipe Miocic and pocketed him £230,000.

Ngannou earned just shy of £400,000 in his rematch with Miocic at UFC 260, winning the title by avenging his loss to the American.

The heavyweight champion is unhappy with his UFC contract after spells of inactivity have forced him to borrow money to live.

Comparing Ngannou’s purses to fellow heavyweight giant Fury, it’s easy to see why the UFC star is keen to crossover to boxing.

Fury earned £7.8m for his first fight with Wilder in 2018 and went on to sign a massive £80m five-fight deal with ESPN after the fight.

In the first fight on his new deal, Fury pocketed £10m for a tune-up fight against German Tom Schwarz, winning by second-round stoppage.

The Brit then took home £12m for his win against Otto Wallin, a fight that was on the brink of being stopped after Fury suffered a horror cut above his eye.

His fight purse for his rematch with Wilder in 2020 went through the roof compared to his previous outings, earning a massive £30m.

Fury earned £13m for knocking out Wilder in their third encounter, putting an end to their epic trilogy.

The knockout artist Ngannou has previously called out Fury and fellow top heavyweight Anthony Joshua for a crossover fight in the ring.

Fury addressed Ngannou’s call-out earlier this year, telling the UFC star if he wants some “Gypsy King money” that he knows “where to come and find it”.
