Ketlen Vieira believes her recent setbacks have made her stronger ahead of first main event slot against Miesha Tate at UFC Vegas 43.
After securing victories in each of her first four UFC appearances, Brazil’s Vieira dropped two of her next three fights — losing to Yana Kunitskaya in her previous outing.
Vieira is slated to face a former Strikeforce and UFC women’s bantamweight champ in Tate. The 30-year-old asserts that she’ll fight for the belt one day and that her prior speedbumps have made her a better fighter.
“Everything made me stronger,” Vieira said in her media day interview through a translator. “I believe that a great champion needs to go through a tough path to become stronger at that’s what happened to me. I believe in God. I believe he knows everything and what needs to happen. Everything I’ve been through just made me stronger.”
Vieira went 10 fights before losing to Irene Aldana at UFC 245. Sitting at No. 7 heading into this fight in a division desperate for new contenders, Vieira isn’t far off from earning a title shot.
Ketlen Vieira says a win at UFC Vegas 43 ‘probably’ puts her right there
“Always when you fight somebody (Tate) like that you believe it can go straight to the title shot,” her translator stated. “So facing Miesha and getting a win against her probably is gonna put me right there.”
The bantamweight contender is of the firm belief that she has the skills to beat Tate, but she thinks she’ll be the hungrier fighter at UFC Vegas 43 as well.
“I’m hungry and I wanna build the story that Miesha built in this sport,” she replied. “That hunger is something that’s keeping me motivated to keep going to try and get that.”
The winner of the UFC Vegas 43 main event will be a prime candidate to be next in line for a title shot.
