Belal Muhammad says he’s the worst matchup for Khamzat Chimaev.
UFC welterweight contender Belal Muhammad believes he’s the one fighter in the division who would be a matchup nightmare for Khamzat Chimaev.
Muhammad is set to make his return to the octagon against Vicente Luque at UFC Vegas 51, a rematch of their first bout at UFC 205. Luque won the fight via first-round knockout, but now he and Muhammad are ranked in the Top 5.
Muhammad is not only one of the hottest welterweights in the UFC at the moment but also one of the top MMA analysts for ESPN. Chimaev’s hype train continues following a win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.
During his UFC Vegas 51 pre-fight press conference, Muhammad explained why he wasn’t surprised that Chimaev looked beatable against Burns.
“He was always human to me, that’s why I wanted that fight,” Muhammad said. “I think he’s still a great fighter. He’s undefeated and still super young. I think people just put him as this robot, this Marvel character that he’s just going to touch you and they fall.
“We all bleed, we’re all human beings. They put him at so high that now that he didn’t walk through No. 2 in the world, he sucks. I’m like, ‘Bro, he’s still a great challenge and a guy that could beat everybody in the division, except for me.”
Belal Muhammad is coming off of two of the best wins of his career
Muhammad is looking to make the welterweight title conversation more intriguing with an impressive performance against Luque. He recently picked up wins over Stephen Thompson and Demian Maia, a pair of former title challengers.
Muhammad is unafraid of Chimaev and is open to the idea of fighting him soon. If he hopes to secure UFC gold, he may need to go through Chimaev to get there.
