UFC Vegas 52: Jessica Andrade defeated Amanda Lemos.
Jessica Andrade defeated Amanda Lemos via submission (standing arm triangle), Round 1 – 3:13 at UFC Vegas 52 on Saturday, April 23, 2022, live from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.
“We worked a lot on this. My coach thought that this might be something that would work. We kept working on it… I took a break at flyweight but this is my division… I’m ready to fight for the title again,” said Andrade.
The first round opened with a touch of gloves. Andrade opened with a pair of kicks. Lemos connected with a pair of punches. Andrade landed a head kick but Lemos came right back with a combination and a powerful leg kick. Lemos that landed a head kick. Andrade charged in forward and locked in a standing arm triangle. Lemos tried to fight her way out of the submission hold but was unable to. Andrade was able to tighten her grip and forced Lemos to tap out. Andrade’s standing arm triangle was the first of its kind in UFC history.
Saturday night represented the biggest fight of Lemos’ career, who was main eventing for the first time. Lemos entered the fight on a five-fight winning streak since losing her UFC debut. The loss is a minor setback for Lemos who will face another ranked contender in her next fight.
Andrade decided to move back down to strawweight after a three-fight stint at flyweight. Despite winning two fights and being the top-ranked contender, Andrade was soundly beaten by Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 261 and was unlikely to get another title shot. Andrade, the former strawweight champion, will face significant competition to get back into the title picture as the division is easily the deepest of the UFC’s four women’s divisions. With her win against Lemos, Andrade will likely jump back into the top five of the strawweight rankings.
