23 significant strikes in one minute and eight seconds secures Cody Durden a dominant first-round knockout over JP Buys.
There is dominance, and then there is what Cody Durden just did to JP Buys. Two knockdowns, 23 significant strikes, and a knockout awarded in just 68 seconds. Buys may have landed a few glancing blows, robbing Durden of the “Perfect” sound effect from Street Fighter, but he was as close to perfect as possible.
The fight started fast, with Durden and Buys making it clear they planned on ending this bout before the first round ended. Durden was clearly faster, making his way in and out of the pocket before Buys could even counter. Buys first attempt to be the aggressor turned out to be his last when Durden rocked him with an impressive hook that spelled the beginning of the end. A ton of punches later, the ref stopped the fight and rewarded a victory to Durden.
After his dominant performance, Durden strutted his way around the Octagon, screaming “I belong here,” putting a fitting cap on his victory.

The UFC flyweight division is fairly thin, with Deiveson Figueiredo, Brandon Moreno, and Kai Kara France carrying the division on their backs. Getting hot prospects like Durden into the top fifteen would breathe new life into the division that it desperately needs.
There is an argument that Durden is still unproven and needs another statement win to earn his way into the rankings. With a 2-2-1 record in the UFC, another win would be required to show some consistency and maybe earn Durden a claim to a number next to his name. However, with another dominant knockout like Durden had over Buys, it would be almost impossible to keep Durden out of the top fifteen.
