UFC Vegas 65: Chase Sherman jokes new fight name should be ‘Short Notice’ (Video)

Chase Sherman takes on Waldo Cortes-Acosta in a heavyweight matchup this Saturday at UFC Vegas 65.

Two weeks ago, Chase Sherman lost out on an opportunity to compete at UFC Vegas 64 when his opponent, Josh Parisian, pulled out due to health concerns. Sherman will return to the Octagon this weekend at UFC Vegas 65 against Waldo Cortes-Acosta instead.

“Mick [Maynard] knows how I am. I don’t ever turn down any fights,” Sherman told FanSided’s Amy Kaplan at UFC media day. “They’re just gonna call me short-notice Sherman from now on. You need a fight, just call me.”

Sherman’s focus now lies on his opponent Cortes-Acosta. The newcomer is coming off a short turnaround, competing less than a month ago at UFC Vegas 63, where he defeated Jared Vanderaa.

“He’s a really game opponent, and I think he’s gonna bring out that dog in me. I’m excited about that aspect of it,” said Sherman. “I believe he’s a more dangerous fighter for sure. The other fight, I was really looking forward to that fight. I mean, I’m looking forward to this fight don’t get me wrong, but that one I was training for 8 weeks. I planned on having a field day with that fight, I was really excited.”

Chase Sherman still wants a future fight with Josh Parisian

Although Sherman gladly accepted the fight with Cortes-Acosta, his recently scrapped bout with  Parisian is a fight Sherman still hopes will happen one day. Sherman expressed his doubts about the circumstances surrounding the last-minute cancellation of his scheduled fight with Parisian.

“I’m not a doctor, but I read the statements he released. To me, it seems like he may have had an anxiety attack, but whatever. I want that fight back though,” said Sherman. “My coach is back there shaking his head, he’s like ‘Be nice’. I’m trying to be f****** nice right now because that was really frustrating. I didn’t get to see my kids for two months, and then that fight got pulled and I had to call my son and tell him I wasn’t gonna be home for another two weeks.”

Despite the change in opponent and his perceived higher level of danger of Cortes-Waldo, Sherman doesn’t believe that he needs to differentiate from his original game plan.

“In the grand scheme of things, they are similar as far as what I plan on doing,” said Sherman. “The big difference is that they’re skilled in different areas and flawed in a little bit different areas, so finding key points of attack and training that a little bit different.”

The hardest thing for Sherman, besides not seeing his family, wasn’t the stylistic change of opponent. Moreso, it was the toll that his hectic traveling and training schedule took on him.

“Your sleep and your training are huge, especially as part of your recovery. Getting that circadian clock back in rhythm and ready to fight, that was kind of the weird thing I guess,” said Sherman.

“Going ahead of time three more hours, and coming back three hours, and then doing it again…it was a cluster f***.”
