Mark Driver, of Sussex Wineries, which includes Ridgeview (from £30 a bottle), Bolney (£28) and Wiston Estates (£29.50), is among UK the producers promising to stop the season falling flat. Mark said: “This is a great opportunity for English wines to show the wider public that they can more than compete with more illustrious and more established foreign competitors. We hope the shortage of Champagne means people will celebrate with a delicious Sussex sparkling wine.”
Home-grown bubbly might leave more cash in your pocket, too, with non-vintage French Moet starting at £38 and Bollinger at £45 in Tesco.
Supermarkets, off-licences and pubs have been complaining of big shortfalls in foreign sparkling wines, caused by supply issues and Brexit-linked border delays.
Forty-eight members of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, including Moet & Chandon and Laurent Perrier, have written to the UK Government for help, saying: “It is imperative that you take immediate steps.”
But Mark says UK winegrowers are more than capable, especially as much of this year’s vintage comes from 2018 – a bumper year for wine. He added: “I hope this Christmas will be looked back on as a pivotal moment for our industry.”
