Sadiq Khan has announced London’s bid to host the Eurovision song contest.
The London Mayor said it is “disappointing” that Ukraine won’t be able to host but London is “ready and willing to step in”.
He added: “We would be honoured to put on a contest that celebrates the people of Ukraine and shows off the very best of Britain.”
Sheffield City Council and Manchester City Council have also announced their intentions to host the ocntest in 2023.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK would “put on a fantastic contest on behalf of our Ukrainian friends”.
He said that in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week they “agreed that wherever Eurovision 2023 is held, it must celebrate the country and people of Ukraine”.
“As we are now hosts, the UK will honour that pledge directly – and put on a fantastic contest on behalf of our Ukrainian friends,” Mr Johnson said.
