The UK is sending six underwater drones to Ukraine in order to safeguard grain shipments leaving Ukrainian ports for the rest of the world.
The drones will help clear Ukrainian coastlines of mines that could endanger cargo and grain departing from various Ukrainian ports.
The UK will assist in the training of Ukrainian soldiers in using the drones, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Saturday.
The MoD added in a statement: “Russia has been weaponising food by destroying Ukrainian agriculture and blockading the country’s Black Sea ports to prevent exports, with devastating consequences for the world’s poorest people as food prices rise.”
The United Nations successfully brokered a deal to allow grain shipments to leave Ukraine back in July, but the route is still littered with explosive mines.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Russia’s cynical attempts to hold the world’s food supply to ransom must not be allowed to succeed.
“This vital equipment and training will help Ukraine make their waters safe, helping to smooth the flow of grain to the rest of the world and supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine as they look to defend their coastline and ports.”
