Ukrainian service dog who sniffed out 150 explosives

An adorable Jack Russell has been sniffing out bombs and saving lives in Ukraine in exchange for slices of cheese.

Two-year-old Patron has been tirelessly searching woodlands in search of landmines and other explosives dropped by Vladimir Putin’s troops.

Patron, whose name translates to ‘bullet’ in Ukrainian, has been officially recognised by the country’s foreign ministry, who has praised him for all his hard work.

The department said on Twitter : “Patron is a service dog in Chernihiv. He has discovered over 150 explosive devices in Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion began.

“Patron works closely with deminers to make Ukrainian cities safe again. Thank you so much for your service.”

The country’s State of Emergency Service (SES) dubbed him a ‘good boy’ for helping pyrotechnicians in the Chernihiv region clear the area of ‘Russian gifts’.

A video of the pup’s hard work was shared online, with the organisation adding: “One day, Patron’s story will be turned into a film, but for now, he is faithfully performing his professional duties.”

Conflict between Russia and Ukraine is ongoing and began in February 2014, with Putin’s ‘full scale invasion’ in Ukraine starting on February 24, 2022.

Tensions have centred around the status of Crimea and parts of the Donbas — both are internationally recognised as part of Ukraine.

Most recently, Russia issued a chilling new threat to the UK over continued weapon supplies to Ukraine.

Putin’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said strikes could be authorised against NATO member countries’ military targets.

She said: “Do we understand correctly that for the sake of disrupting the logistics of military supplies, Russia can strike military targets on the territory of those Nato countries that supply arms to the Kyiv regime?”
