Christmas is the one time of year which can get extremely expensive; from the presents gifted to one another, travelling up and down the country to see loved ones and new outfits for every photo opportunity. The food and drink consumed can also rack up a hefty bill, so supermarkets have been getting competitive with their prices. But which food giant offers the best deals this Christmas and comes out on top as the cheapest supermarket?

As for which supermarket was the most affordable for a Christmas shop, Aldi came out on top.

M&S Food, on the other hand, emerged as the most expensive.

For a budget Christmas dinner shop at Aldi, it would cost £39.85.

Asda came in second with the shop costing £52.67 while Sainsbury’s took third place with a total price of £56.32.

Morrisons was number four with £58.50 while doing your Christmas food shop at Tesco would set you back £59.84.

Waitrose was the second most expensive at £97.52 and M&S Food was the most expensive at £120.60.

Salman Haqqi, money.co.uk’s personal finance expert offers his top tips on how to save money on your Christmas food and drink shopping.

He said: “One of the best things about Christmas, this year especially, is having the chance to invite family and friends round for celebrations, quality time, and of course – some delicious food and drink.

“That being said, the festive period can be one of the most expensive times of year, so it’s always wise to plan ahead and consider the budget you are willing to set aside for your grocery items before heading to the supermarket.

“Hosting Christmas dinner can be one of the most expensive elements of the season when factoring in the price of meat, numerous side dishes and plenty of drinks, snacks and desserts.

“This can definitely take a toll on an already stretched December budget.”

Salman continued: “It’s certainly worth bearing in mind that the fewer people you invite, the fewer you will ultimately have to feed.

“However, if you are looking to host a larger Christmas party, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask guests to bring some drinks, desserts, meat or even side dishes with them.

“This not only means that guests will bring food with them they know they will enjoy, it will also ensure there is plenty to go around and a good selection of options for all.

“Try to look for smaller joints of meat while browsing the supermarket – replace additional pricier joints of meat such as gammon and lamb with steaks or even chicken.

“Finally, use your freezer space to avoid any food waste.

“Take advantage of any reduced food and special offers at supermarkets, and stock up on essentials ahead of the festivities,” he added.

Note: The basket included own-brand items – such as whole turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce, sprouts, mulled wine, and yule log, alongside finest options of the same items. The cost of the Christmas Dinners per supermarket has been based on feeding up to four to eight guests.
