Unai Emery says his passion for the game meant he could not turn down the challenge of becoming the new manager of Aston Villa.

The former Arsenal boss will officially start work at Villa Park on November 1, once he has finalised a work permit, after agreeing to leave Spanish side Villarreal.

Emery had spent two years with the Yellow Submarine, winning the Europa League in 2021, but planned to leave when his contract expired next summer and believes a return to the Premier League with Villa was just too good an offer to ignore.

He told a final press conference in Spain yesterday: ‘This [offer], I have considered that I had to take it, as a sports challenge, as a different project. It is a personal and professional decision.

‘Every league, every club, every context is different; it’s not better or worse, it’s different. I leave a project still alive in Europe and there I will have a different one.’

Emery, who rejected a move to Newcastle last year, joins Villa with the club 15th after sacking manager Steven Gerrard last week.

Caretaker Aaron Danks guided the side to a 4-0 win over Brentford on Sunday and is set to be in charge for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle.
