Ever since Daisy Edgar-Jones took up our every waking thought in her role as Normal People’s Marianne Sheridan (alongside Connell’s chain, ofc), we’ve been holding our breath to hear what she’ll be doing next. And we finally know: the Golden Globe nominee is starring in a brand new crime thriller series, Under the Banner of Heaven, and we could not be more excited about it.
Plus, if Daisy’s involvement wasn’t enough to get you excited (though, hello, we hardly need any info to get excite about a new crime drama), then you might also be interested to hear that Dustin Lance Black (yep, Tom Daley’s husband) was an executive producer and behind much of the screenwriting.
With only a week to go until the series premieres on Hulu, here’s everything we know about the non-fiction show (based on a book by the same name, written by John Krakauer)…
What will Under the Banner of Heaven be about?
When Brenda Lafferty (played by Edgar-Jones) and her 15-month old daughter are found murdered in their home in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley , a detective, who is also a devout Latter-day Saints (LDS) elder, takes on the case and finds that his faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder.
As he investigates events that transpired within the Lafferty family, he uncovers buried truths about the origins of the LDS religion and the violent consequences of unyielding faith. What the detective, a devout Mormon, unearths leads him to question everything he thought he knew about his own faith. The miniseries, set in 1984, tells the story through the eyes of the detective.
“After so many years of work, I’m incredibly grateful to Imagine and FX for their patience with and commitment to bringing this story to the screen,” said Black. “Raised in the LDS faith, my hope is that this true-crime thriller might shed light on the horrific brutalities perpetrated in the name of God in our own backyards.”
Who will star in Under the Banner of Heaven?
The show features Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield as Detective Pyre and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Brenda Lafferty.
Other cast members also include Sam Worthington – best known for playing Jake Sully in Avatar -who plays Ron Lafferty, Brenda’s husband, and Macaulay Culkin’s younger brother, Rory Culkin, as Samuel Lafferty. Alongside them, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, and Sandra Seacat also star in the suspenseful series.
Is there a trailer for Under the Banner of Heaven?
Yes, yes there is, and it’s two minutes of intense, spine-tingling suspense. No, but seriously, we didn’t breathe while watching it…
When will Under the Banner of Heaven be released?
Well, the good news is that there’s not long to wait, as the first episode of Under the Banner of Heaven premieres on Hulu on April 28, with one episode being released each week after that.
