Jay Dobyns, 61, spent two years with the Mesa, Ariz., chapter of the biker gang, where one of the things he was exposed to was the organization’s strict rules surrounding sex.

Dobyns ran with the Angels between 2001 and 2003, posing as a gunrunner and debt collector Jay Davis, a.k.a. Jaybird, and quickly learned there were rules about relationships with women – and violent consequences for those who disobey.
“With regards to women, there’s a hierarchy that takes place,” Dobyns said during an interview with Insider.

“There are Old Ladies, who are the wives and girlfriends of members [at the top of the chain],” he explained. “You better not get caught trying to mess around with a member’s wife or girlfriend, because there’s a violent price to pay.”

There were also groupies who would often show up at the clubhouse, but they were OK to be passed around.
“They moved from member to member to member,” he said.
As for those who have a certain idea of what being part of Hells Angels is all about, Dobyns dispelled the stereotypes that gang members are drug addicts.
“Some were fitness freaks. They ate well, they got their rest, they didn’t drink, they didn’t smoke,” he clarified. “To decline those things wasn’t necessarily a false alarm.”
Dobyns added that many of the chapters were involved with causes in their community, whether they donated blood or participated in toy drives for children.
“They make positive contributions to society,” he said. “That shouldn’t be taken away from them.”
