United Airlines on Tuesday announced its plans to add 35 flights and three clubs to its presence at Denver International Airport, utilizing 12 new gates in the process.
The two clubs in Concourse B, which will be the same size at 35,000 square feet each, will count as United’s biggest in the world. The 25,000-square-foot club in Concourse A and one of the two clubs in Concourse B are set to open this summer.
The public will get access to the other Concourse B club next year.
Travelers should be able to use the dozen new gates in the A and B concourses by the middle of next year. Once those are in operation, they’ll bring United’s total number at DIA to 90 — the most of any carrier at the airport.
Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines’ lease encompasses 40 gates. “We expect the two carriers to get to their full number of gates as soon as the new A East ground load facility is complete,” said DIA spokesperson Alex Renteria.
Frontier Airlines, which currently operates nine gates, is set to jump to 14.
At the end of 2022, the DIA team completed two major concourse projects from a program that built 39 gates over the last four years. The final two expansions resulted in 19 new gates, which United leased.
The carrier is already using seven new gates, with the other 12 soon to come into operation.
United’s expansion is prompted by its investment of almost $1 billion toward infrastructure in Denver, which also includes a new check-in lobby and new technology at its gates. The airline is spending $40 million to update 55 gates at Concourse B with new furniture, self-service kiosks and other renovations.
This summer, United will double its number of early-morning departures and late-evening arrivals in Denver. Four new nonstop flights will travel to cities that aren’t currently served by any Denver carriers:
- San Juan, Puerto Rico
- Lexington, Ky.
- Greensboro, N.C.
- Dayton, Ohio
The San Juan flights on new 737 MAX planes will begin on Oct. 29. Additionally, flights to Montego Bay, Jamaica, on the same aircraft are anticipated to start on Nov. 4.
The Tuesday announcement comes as United pilots, alongside Southwest and American Airlines, push back against their individual companies over stalled contract negotiations. United pilots picketed the United Flight Training Center in Denver in protest earlier this month.
“Our pilots deserve the best contract of any airline in the world, and that’s what we have on the table with them right now,” said CEO Scott Kirby. “I think we’re on the one-yard line.”
Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock dubbed May 23, 2023, as “United Airlines Day in the city of Denver, in honor of their significant contributions to our great city.” United — the city’s largest private employer — currently boasts a Denver labor force of almost 10,000, with the goal of hiring more than 2,300 employees this year.
The carrier’s other hubs include Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. The airline calls itself the largest worldwide, as measured by available seat miles.
