Unsolved Mysteries is one of the longest-running programs in the history of television and was the first of its kind to present a call-to-action for its viewers to provide helpful tips on these cold cases in a pre-internet world. Cadence13 has released its second season of the Unsolved Mysteries podcast, which shares many of the elements of the beloved original and updated Netflix series, including the music, intimate interviews, and a call to listeners to help solve these mysteries.
The newest season of the podcast, narrated by Steve French, features cases of missing persons, unexplained creatures, murder and the paranormal. It will also include updates from the first season. Produced and directed by Cadence13 and Cosgrove/Meurer Productions (the creators of the original 1987 series, Terry Dunn Meurer and John Cosgrove), Unsolved Mysteries Season 2 will share 40 new episodes weekly. The trailer and first episode can be listened to here.
I spoke with Terry Meurer about what listeners can expect for the second season and how successful they have been as of late in solving any of these cold cases.
Risa Sarachan: What’s unique about the stories presented in Season 2?
Terry Meurer: Every unsolved mystery is unique, with different characters and surprising twists and turns. Season 2 continues where Season 1 left off, presenting more chilling and solvable mysteries, hoping that one of the listeners has a clue to provide closure for families and law enforcement.
Sarachan: Will there be any new information about cases from Season 1? Were any of the cases solved?
Meurer: We’ll be presenting an update on one case from Season One that was solved after 40 years.
Sarachan: How similar is the Unsolved Mysteries Podcast to the television series? How do they differ?
Meurer: Both the podcast and Netflix series present intriguing unsolved cases from a variety of categories. There are fewer interviews in the podcast episodes, so as not to confuse the listeners with too many characters. Both have a call to action at the end and both represent the same mission: to solve these cases. The podcast differs because it has a host, Steve French, who guides listeners through the episodes.
Sarachan: What story this season stood out for you?
Meurer: The premiere episode about the murder of Chelsea Small is a chilling case, as is the story of Russell and Shirley Dermond, who were both murdered in their retirement community in Georgia. And this season we have a case of alien abduction, told by a very credible “experiencer.”
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
