Netflix will release Volume 3 of the chilling franchise Unsolved Mysteries, released as a three-part event on October 18th, October 25th and November 1st. The iconic series explores strange deaths and disappearances, unexplainable paranormal activity, and kidnappings. Unsolved Mysteries is produced by Cosgrove/Meurer, the creators of the original docuseries and by 21 Laps Entertainment, the producers of Stranger Things. Viewers submitted two of the mysteries presented in Volume 3.
Forbes spoke with award-winning filmmaker and President of Cosgrove/Meurer Productions, Terry Dunn Meurer. She serves as the co-creator and executive producer of Unsolved Mysteries. We discussed how they select the stories featured on the show and if any have gone on to be solved by viewers.
Risa Sarachan: The stories in this season are incredibly powerful. How did you go about selecting them? Do you ever feel frustrated that you can’t cover more stories?
Terry Meurer: We have thousands of stories and submissions in our database, and choosing 9 cases to cover in Volume 3 was a huge challenge. I wish we could cover all of them! What we always look for in choosing stories is a variety of types of mystery: unexplained deaths, missing persons, wanted fugitives and paranormal cases. And we look for diversity in ethnicity, location and age as well.
Sarachan: Was there any particular type of mystery you wanted to make sure to include in this season?
Meurer: Some of our cases are just great mysteries and probably not easily solvable, for instance, a UFO or paranormal case. So we always want to make sure to include cases like wanted fugitives or missing persons that have a good chance of being solved. We also look for cases that we believe will generate much-needed leads.
Sarachan: Any updates on leads from past seasons?
Meurer: We received thousands of tips from viewers at unsolved.com after the launch of Volumes 1 and 2 in 2020, and law enforcement received additional tips. None of those cases have been solved…yet. New tips come in every day and we’re still hopeful that one of those tips will help resolve a case.
Sarachan: What story from this season really stuck with you?
Meurer: I must say that all the mysteries stick with me. I personally meet almost all the people involved in the cases and get quite involved in the details of the stories. So they are all quite important to me. This season, I’m especially hopeful that viewers will locate Tamara “Tammy” Williams, who is wanted for the death of David Carter. And I’m praying that the children in our parental abduction episode will be located.
