MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines football athlete Yoro Sangare passed away on Thursday. He was 22.

The UAAP confirmed the death of Sangare but the cause has yet to be revealed as an autopsy is still ongoing.

The third-year physical education student from Mali sat out in the UAAP Season 85 men’s football tournament due to an injury from a friendly match before the start of the tournament.

UP was in mourning when it bombed out of Final Four contention after settling for a 2-2 draw against Far Eastern University on Thursday at UP Diliman Football Field.

“He was very driven, hardworking, and very kind. He was the kindest person I’ve ever met,” said UP assistant coach Popoy Clarino. “He started training with us a year before he got in.

“Because of his dedication and hard work, we took a chance with him. He really wanted to bring his talent to UP. He will be missed but we are going to celebrate his life,” he added.

Arturo Alleje scored the two goals for the Fighting Maroons heroics in the 45+2 and 90+1 minutes but they couldn’t get the win, which would have given them a place in the Final Four.

During the women’s 3×3 basketball tournament at Casobe Resort, University and Santo Tomas and National University also offered a short moment before playing the championship game.
