BSNL offering free 4G SIM

  • Existing BSNL 2G and 3G customers can upgrade to 4G SIMs free of cost.
  • The company is also offering 4GB of data as complimentary for its customers.
  • The free 4GB data has a validity of three months.
  • Customers who wish to upgrade to 4G will have to visit the nearest BSNL customer service centre, retailer, direct selling agent, and others.

BSNL 4G and 5G rollout timeline

BSNL plans to complete the 4G rollout in India by June 2024, as confirmed by telecom’s Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) P.K. Purwar (via) at the annual Mobile India Congress (2023). Soon after, the telecom network will begin 5G rollout in the country.

Union IT and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw a while ago mentioned that BSNL’s 4G network will be upgraded to 5G in November-December, but the 4G rollout took longer than expected and this in turn pushed 5G availability only next year.

According to a PTI report from October, the state-run Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) has indigenously developed the entire 5G network for BSNL. The same will apparently be deployed in the next six to eight months. “C-DoT demonstrated the test network set-up using its 5G gears in a live video call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the India Mobile Congress 2023,” as per the report.

BSNL free data offers

  • The extra data will be available over the data that is being offered with the recharge plans of Rs 251, Rs 299, and Rs 398.
  • Customers need to recharge via the BSNL Self-care app or website to get free data benefits.
