AN URGENT heatwave warning has been issued to Scots heading to Spain in the coming days.
As the holiday season kicks-off, extreme heat is set to sweep across parts of Europe this week and temperatures could reach record-breaking levels.
STV weatherman Sean Batty said parts of north Africa and the Middle East have hit 50C – and the baking hot weather is heading to southern Europe.
This means that popular tourist spots will be hotter than usual at this time of year.
If you are jetting off to Spain’s Costa Del Sol and heading to busy beach spots such as Torremolinos or Fuengirola – the mercury will peak at around around 35-38C in the next few days.
The Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Majorca will be in the mid 30s.
The north of Majorca will probably be the hottest with 36-37C possible in Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa.
Along the Costa Blanca where resorts such as Benidorm and Alicante, as well as the Costa Brava and Salou, temps will be around 32-35C.
Away from the popular coastal resorts, inland temperatures will be even higher and will reach 42-45C in places such as Granada and Seville.
The extreme heat will head towards southern Italy this weekend and into next week.
The mercury will be in the low 40s in inland parts of the country.
Spain has had a warmer than average spring and summer so far, and holidaymakers were warned in June of an “extremely hot” time ahead.
AEMET predicted a “high probability” that the country will experience a summer that is hotter than normal.
The heat has already been building in Spain after the country registered its hottest spring on record as well as its second driest.
Last year was Spain’s hottest since records began in 1961, and three intense summer heatwaves spanned 41 days – the most ever.
