New research has revealed that less than half (47 percent) of British drivers slow down whilst driving in winter conditions, even though almost one in 10 have had an accident. And, with millions of journeys expected in the run-up to the festive period, drivers are being urged to remain vigilant.
This comes as critical weather warnings flashed across the UK last week due to heavy snowfall.
In the study by ATS Euromaster, one in five (21 percent) motorists will try and find a different way to travel, but with rail strikes across the UK, many have to stick to driving, despite the critical weather warnings.
If motorists must drive in the snow, ice or rain this Christmas, Simon Waye, technical engineer at ATS Euromaster, has provided tips for driving safely.
Use dipped headlights (and avoid a £50 fine)
If visibility is seriously reduced due to poor weather, drivers should use dipped headlights or fog lights to help themselves and others. The research revealed that almost two thirds (62 percent) of British drivers are not aware that this will help improve visibility, even though it could land them with a fine.

Drivers should make sure they have their air conditioning on to make sure their visibility isn’t reduced.
Driving with misty windows could land drivers with a £1,000 fine and three points on the license.
Mr Waye added: “Driving on ice and snow can be very dangerous. Consider if you do need to take this journey.
“Some 21 percent of drivers said they will avoid driving in the snow and find a different way to travel. We recommend looking for an alternative way to travel, as a safer option.”
