USA legend Eric Wynalda says Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic needs to be at a club where he ‘gets more game-time’ and has suggested his compatriot should join another Premier League club.

Much was expected of Pulisic after the American completed a £58m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

Pulisic had thrived at the Bundesliga club and established himself as one of the brightest prospects in Europe across his four seasons in Germany.

The winger scored 11 goals in his first season at Stamford Bridge but has failed to reach double-digits since the 2019-20 campaign.

Pulisic has found himself on the periphery over the past 12 months, starting just three of Chelsea’s 12 Premier League games this season.

Former USA forward Wynalda insists Pulisic needs to be playing more regularly and says he ‘would not mind’ if the 24-year-old left Chelsea to join fellow Premier League club Newcastle United.

Pulisic has been linked with a move to St James’ Park since Newcastle were taken over last year and became one of the richest clubs in world football.

‘Long-term, Christian Pulisic needs to be a left-winger in a team where he’s going to get more game-time,’ Wynalda told VegasInsider.

‘I would not mind seeing Pulisic wearing the black and white stripes of Newcastle United.’

Chelsea boss Graham Potter has utilised Pulisic and Blues summer signing Raheem Sterling as wing-backs recently, with mixed results.

Wynalda says Sterling did not look comfortable in the position but feels Pulisic has at least showed a desire to impress in an unfamiliar role.

He added: ‘Sterling has played wing-back and it hasn’t gone well at all. There have been a lot of looks to the bench.

‘There were looks like, “I can’t defend, I should be up there where Mason Mount’s playing… Put me up there, I don’t want to be here”.

‘Pulisic is saying, “I’ll play, I got it, let’s go” and that’s why we got to see him at wing back.

‘He got an assist out of one of the games where he came inside to pick up the ball which might be him indicating to his manager that he needs more of the ball and he doesn’t want to be chasing the ball. He wants to have the ball.’

Chelsea, who are currently sixth in the Premier League, face Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal this week.
