Kuldeep had to undergo a knee surgery following an injury which he incurred during the IPL 2021. He also spent rehabilitation time at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru in June 2022 due to a hand injury.
The 28-year-old also endured tough times in the Indian team post his slump in form within IPL 2019. Recalling the bygone tough days, Kuldeep said he would get angry every 15 minutes.
“Whenever I was down, from the Indian team I used to talk mostly to Chahal. I used to get mood swings when I was injured and had surgery. I used to get angry every 15 minutes and vent it to him.
“He always advised me to just focus on the rehab and the comeback will be great. It did help me a lot,” Kuldeep has said on the latest episode of the Breakfast with Champions hosted by Gaurav Kapur. Chahal was also sitting alongside Kuldeep on the show.
Kuldeep’s career has revived ever since he was inducted in the Delhi Capitals (DC) squad in the IPL 2022. He picked 21 wickets at an average of 19.95 in 14 games in the season.
In the ongoing IPL 2023 season, he has eight wickets to his name in nine matches at an average of 19.95. He is the leading wicket-taker for his side at the moment.
The left-arm wrist spinner has credited Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting for his revival and backing. The confidence helped Kuldeep in his international outings as well.
“When I was picked by Delhi, I remember Ricky calling me and he has made one thing clear. He told me that no matter how I would bowl, I would play all 14 games.
“That gave me a lot of confidence and I felt settled. He doesn’t worry too much about whether I have taken wickets in the game or not. He just advises me on the areas I can hit as a bowler,” he said.
