Oleksandr Usyk believes Tyson Fury poses no greater threat than Anthony Joshua after watching The Gypsy King take on Derek Chisora from ringside. Sergey Lapin – a Usyk team member – says that the Ukrainian is even more confident of victory after taking a good look at his future foe.
The pair are set to face each other in the first undisputed heavyweight unification clash of the four-belt era next. According to Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk, the fight is being targeted for a date between February 18 and March 4 in the Middle East.
Negotiations are understood to be going well with all parties on board with the fight. Fury’s US promoter Bob Arum is in regular communication with Usyk’s manager Egis Klimas while Frank Warren’s son George is thrashing out terms with Krassyuk.
In preparation for the fight, Usyk and his handlers were in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to see Fury in action as he dismantled rugged veteran Chisora inside ten rounds. Despite the dominant display, Fury did little to impress the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, with Usyk and his team paying particularly close attention to how the Brit works with his corner.
“After seeing Fury in the flesh, our team is even more confident that Usyk will prevail and become undisputed and bring that WBC green belt home to Ukraine. The threat that Fury poses is no greater and no tougher than Anthony Joshua. We know how that ended for Anthony. We are very confident of beating Fury.”
Usyk is coming off consecutive victories over Joshua in September 2021 and August 2022. He currently holds the WBA, WBO, IBF, and Ring Magazine titles and will be hoping to add Fury’s WBC strap to his collection next year.
