Van Bronckhorst: Rangers will be more attacking against RB Leipzig at home

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw his side lose narrowly to RB Leipzig in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final, and promised a more attacking approach in the return leg at Ibrox next week.

Van Bronckhorst’s side sat deep early on and contained their Bundesliga opponents before attempting to fashion their own chances as the game progressed, but the team’s hard work was undone when Angelino volleyed home after a Leipzig corner.

That means Rangers will need to win at Ibrox next Thursday to turn the tie around and reach the final, and Van Bronckhorst said his side will take a different approach to the match.

“I don’t think we’re going to play the same way like we did today,” he said. “You know, we have to win.

“We have to win by a margin of two and of course, one goal gets us back into the tie. I think we’re capable in doing so with respecting the quality of the opponent but, you know, we had many, many great European nights at home.

“The fans will definitely give us energy and will give us all the, all the old ambiance we need. And my players should, should fight for the final.”

Despite losing, the Rangers boss believes his side carried out the game plan effectively and performed well. He says his side will make every effort to stun Leipzig when they get them in front of an Ibrox crowd.

“I think we defended and we played really well,” van Bronckhorst said. “We wanted to get a good result.

“I think first half we were well organised, especially defensively, to give not many chances away.

“Of course, with the quality of their players you know they will always create something but we made it really difficult for them to create chances. I think the first half we defended really well and we weren’t comfortable on the ball and in the second half we changed a little bit our set-up, especially in midfield and we were much more confident and created some chances.

“It’s always disappointing that you lose a goal so late in the game, but it’s a 1-0 defeat and we know what to do next week.

“It’s a final in Seville we can qualify for that we have to give everything for.

“I’m sure that our home game at Ibrox will give us a lot of energy to overcome Leipzig.”
