start the
Gran Canaria Air Battle, the largest kitesurfing and wing foil festival in the Canary Islands, which returns this year to the Vargas beach of Gran Canaria from July 21 to 24. This Thursday the presentation ceremony of its fourth edition and the first qualifying heats in the Wave and Big Air classes (high jumps) was held, which “was being a complete success” for the Sports Councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Francisco Castellano, since “there are around
80 riders on this magnificent beach in the municipality of Agüimes, who have come from all over Spain and even from other countries in Europe and Latin America».
In his opinion, this means international projection for Gran Canaria as a European sports island, in addition to bringing international events to the island for our athletes. “It’s a
stage open to the world, to any sport discipline, also so that our Canarian athletes can compete with the best in the world”, declared the representative of the island council, an institution that sponsors the event through its Sports and Tourism areas.
The inauguration act also included the participation of the mayor of the Agüimes Town Hall, Óscar Hernández, for whom it is a demonstration of the consolidation of this beach due to the conditions it has, the test itself and the activity it has throughout year. “The consolidation of this test has led us institutions to collaborate to adapt, for example, access to the beach, always respecting the environment,” said the representative of the municipal corporation.
The event has the collaboration of the Agüimes town hall and the
Royal Canarian Sailing Federationin addition to private sponsors such as Ahembo, with its 7UP brand, whose head of communication, institutional relations and sponsorships, Ida Vega, has been present.
For the organizer, Manuel Martínez, it is “a pride” to bring this fourth edition to Vargas, since it began in 2018 “with a group of kitesurfers from here” to celebrate the first championship of the Canary Islands, several of Spain and a World Cup.
Some of the riders who were present at the press conference highlighted that the level has risen notably every year. This was expressed by the Tenerife of Italian origin, Jeremy Burlando, current runner-up in the world of kitesurfing (Freestyle). For another of the favourites, Lorenzo Casati (based in Tenerife),
the wind conditions are very good, so he and his brother, Leonardo, will try to “give their best”. The Casati brothers have been competing since 2018 in this event, which they consider
“the largest kitesurfing and wing foiling event in the Canary Islands”although they have signed up since the first edition because “I have always liked the atmosphere there, the people are happy and every year it motivates me to improve,” said Lorenzo.
For competitors of Italian origin, kitesurfing means freedom, “because we can fly”. The female presence has also increased little by little each year, highlighting athletes such as Julia Castro from Majorera.
