The Dutchman won the race ahead of his teammate Checo Pérez and the British driver from Mercedes George Russell, with Sainz fourth and Alonso ninth
Max Verstappen, the new leader of the Formula 1 World Championship, led the Red Bull team’s display in Montmeló, which witnessed an unquestionable victory for the Dutchman, ahead of his teammate, the Mexican Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez. Britain’s George Russell again beat his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to close out the podium.
The current champion benefited from the abandonment of Charles Leclerc, who until now had lived a practically flawless weekend and was leading the race with solvency until a breakdown forced the Monegasque to throw in the towel, also giving up the leadership of the World Cup.
Carlos Sainz finished in fourth place after beating Hamilton in the final stretch, with problems in his car, to the applause of the public. The Spanish fans also vibrated with the comeback of Fernando Alonso, who came last and climbed eleven positions to ninth place, leaving at least a sweet aftertaste despite the problems at the beginning of the season.
