After a fall just steps from his front door, former Bay Area radio journalist Mike Colgan was paralyzed from the neck down. But four weeks after the accident, his son said Colgan is committed to recovering and reclaiming his life — no matter how difficult the process.
“He’s able to move the fingers on his right hand. He can raise his knee a little bit, and he has had some small movements on his left side,” said Colgan’s son, Kevin. “There is connection there – and there is movement.”
Mike Colgan, who spent more than 50 years reporting on news in the Bay Area, was approaching his retirement home in Goodyear, Ariz., when he tripped and fell. Hands in his pockets, Colgan was unable to cushion his fall; he broke his neck. He had spinal surgery soon after; now, he is recovering in a rehabilitation facility about 15 miles away from his home.
“Last week, he said to me: ‘If I could just regain use of my right hand, that would be amazing,’ ” said Kevin Colgan. Still, he added later, “we just don’t know how much better it can get.”
After 33 years with KCBS in San Francisco, Colgan was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2015. He retired in February of 2020, after a career that included interviewing the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa, covering earthquakes in Mexico and murders in Yosemite, and following presidential campaigns as far back as 1968.
On Sunday, a former colleague of Colgan’s set up a GoFundMe to help with his ongoing medical expenses. By Tuesday, more than $11,500 had been raised by supporters of Colgan.
“Mike has brought joy, love, and stories to so many people,” Colgan’s former colleague, Jennifer Hodges, wrote on the platform. “Let’s show him that HIS story doesn’t end here.”
