For a while now, VFX artists have been sharing their horror stories of working with Marvel Studios, which has been under fire for the shabby visuals in its films and TV projects.
With recent movies like Thor: Love and Thunder, viewers have felt a slight decrease in quality that is also visible to see in trailers for Disney+ shows like She-Hulk. While fans and VFX artists have clamored for more time and better working conditions while developing these projects, the industry is dejected to see the amount of work rise with Phase 5 & 6 of the MCU, which was recently announced during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.
In an recent Defector article, several VFX industry members talked about their disdain of being part of the industry, which lacks unionization. Compared to other filmmaking industries, VFX is one of the few areas that studios use to cut costs and put artists and producers under stressful working conditions.
The article is littered with several troubling experiences laid out by VFX artists, who have worked on several high-budget studio films. which include the ones made by Marvel. While the situation has been quite worrisome over the past few years, artists believe that it will get worse in the future, as Marvel Studios has packed the next three years with several movies and TV shows, as part of Phase 5 and Phase 6.
The situation coupled with Marvel’s lack of better working conditions for the artists that work on these projects have caused their appeal to decrease massively in the industry, even though these projects have some of the biggest budgets in Hollywood.
In the end, it seems like the VFX industry wants better solutions while working on Marvel films and TV shows, as artists and producers are having a hard time keeping up with high quality standards due to the sheer amount of work they have to handle. And with no respite in sight, it looks like the industry is poised to unionize for better benefits for its thousands of members.
