First overall pick Victor Wembanyama is putting all of his basketball focus on his first NBA season.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the 19-year-old phenom informed France’s national team over the weekend that he will not be participating in the FIBA World Cup as he prepares to be a Spur. Even though he says the team would’ve supported his decision had he decided to play for his home country.
“It would not be realistic in terms of development and not prudent in terms of health,” Wembanyama admitted. I hope people will understand. It’s frustrating for me, too. The France team is still central for me. I want to win as many titles as possible with the team. But I think it’s a necessary sacrifice.”
As he continues to develop his body, Wembanyama did the math and believed playing 170 games in a 24-month period would be too much if you consider the 82-game NBA regular season and the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The top prospect just played 62 games with Metropolitans 92, helping guide them to the French League Finals prior to the draft.
Even without Wemby, the strong French squad is expected to be a tough out come Aug. 25.
