Victor Wembanyama isn’t shying away from the oversized hype for his NBA arrival.
Expectations are so high for the NBA Draft’s No. 1 pick that some onlookers will feel let down if he’s anything but a generational player. Wembanyama also aims to be the best.
The San Antonio Spurs rookie told Michelle Beadle that he’s wearing No. 1 to represent his “mentality” and lofty goals.
“For me, there’s no other option but to be number 1,” Wembanyama said. “I can’t accept to be behind someone in some way.”
Michelle Beadle: "Take us through choosing [your jersey number]."
Wembanyama: "It's a mentality… There's no other option but to be number 1. I can't accept to be behind someone in some way."

The 7-foot-5 neophyte has the talent to forever change the Spurs’ fortunes.
Wembanyama will instantly have a noticeable height advantage over his peers, but the 19-year-old also possesses a perimeter game with the ability to cover considerable ground on defense. He averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks in a French professional league before joining the NBA.
There was no doubt Wembanyama would be the No. 1 pick, but he’ll now look to prove he’s No. 1 in every facet. NBA fans can get an early glimpse of the hyped prospect when he makes his Summer League debut against No. 2 pick Brandon Miller and the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night.
